Seamless Transitions is our sewing workshop that operates within Freedom Unlimited. We have recently completed a six months pilot training scheme working with some of the women in HMP Edinburgh.
We had a total of 20 women come to the training and we celebrated their success last week at their graduation ceremony. the majority of the ladies had never sewn before and they surprised themselves at how quickly they were able to learn new skills. The feedback from them was that the classes had ‘boosted their confidence’, ‘gave them a real sense of achievement’, ‘gave them a goal to aim for when they got out’.
Two of the ladies are serious about working with FUE when they start their new journey on the outside. One of these has since been released and is engaging with us right now. This is absolutely wonderful and exactly what we set out to do.
Freedom Unlimited is now looking to secure further funding so that we can continue the project in the near future. If you would like to support this cause in any way, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We are specifically looking for funding as well as sewing teachers and volunteers who would like to work with us and contribute to making a tangible difference in those who are seeking to make that genuine “seamless transition” back into life after prison.
Many of the items that the women have made are now on sale at the Scottish Design Exchange at Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre.
